Week at the Creek!

I'm just giddy about the week ahead!  One of my passions is serving the youth.
For the 14th year in a row (except 2 years ago following Kasidi's spine surgery) I'm headed to camp!
And this year, for the first time in 10 years...I'm going without a Pack N' Play!
That's right, my babies are divvied up among relatives and friends.
I miss them already!
But I'm looking forward to serving the youth with both hands this year.
Four of my Treasures are having a blast with their aunt, uncle and cousins!

And the littlest three are staying home with Daddy, spending their days with friends, because...
...just a few days after camp, we'll be rising to that 2 a.m. alarm and starting to harvest the Lord's crop!

I'm really looking forward to a week of quiet moments with the Lord and loud moments with the youth.

We truly appreciate your prayers for the week ahead.

TO HIM BE GLORY!

We have asked the Lord to give us creative ideas for raising every dime we need to get our boy home, and we want to thank Him in advance that He will provide it all!

ALL GLORY TO HIM!

And Speaking of Changed Hearts...

My dear friend, Stefanie over at Ni Hao Y'all has guest posted on one of our favorite orphan ministry blogs ~ Show Hope

 Beautifully written, Truthfully inspired!

Guest Post: Why does God call people to adopt?

Why does God call people to adopt?

This might seem like a question with an obvious answer. But sometimes, stating the obvious is a good thing.
For us, the call to adopt was heard relatively late in life. In fact, it was about the time we’d decided we were done growing our family the biological way. Yes, we’d told God we were His, and surrendered our plans to Him, but no more kids, m’kay?
Adoption was not even on our radar.
Almost 10 years later, we have adopted 7 children from China. Our beautiful brood has grown from 4 to 11. The Lord has done a mighty big work in our little family.
But why? Why are some of us called to adopt?
When we accept Christ as our Savior, He calls us to join Him in His story of redemption. In fact, Jesus tells us to “Go…” For each of us that is a unique directive, and for some of us, that is adoption. And when God calls us to adopt, I can testify… He can use it to transform us in a big way.

5 Reasons God Calls Us To Adopt:

1. For the orphan. This might seem painfully obvious, but oh my, does the Lord do an amazing work in the life of a once-orphaned-but-now-beloved-child. And please don’t miss this: when we adopt, it’s God’s idea. It is God that’s going in – and He asks us to join Him. If we try to get into the driver’s seat, it can breed self-righteousness and back-patting. And God wants to use all things to draw us closer to Him, not elevate ourselves. The beautiful thing about being God’s assistant in this thing called adoption is that is you get go join in His work, get your hands dirty, see the way the Lord transforms and yet He holds up both ends. He begins the work – way before He invited you in – and He promises to finish it. And then He gets the real glory. There is nothing I have experienced in my 45 years that compares to witnessing a child bloom in a forever family. It’s a beautiful thing.

2. For you. This might not be quite so obvious, but I would say that adoption is just as much for you as it is for your child. When God chooses those He wants to be His hands and feet on behalf of the fatherless, He already knows our hearts. And although you already (obviously!) know the Lord, He isn’t done with you yet. And nothing can change your heart for the Father like adoption. Just as He has been loving, merciful and full of grace toward us, we get to do the same – to a complete stranger. A small complete stranger, but a stranger all the same. And experiencing how the Lord uses you to lavishly love this child is a tangible reminder of how lavishly He loves you – even before you were His. He is the perfect, loving and good-gift-giving Father. And He will use the mountaintop experiences of the adoption journey as well as the valley experiences to draw you closer to Him. Just be sure to keep your eyes open and your heart soft by staying close to Him, because these brushes with the Lord will change you from the inside out.

3. For your family. This might have some of y’all scratching your head. But I’m sticking by it – it has been an incredible truth that I might have missed if we had adopted only once. But adoption will completely change the hearts of your other children. We had 4 biological children, aged 2 to 14, at the time God called us to adopt. And I can’t even begin to imagine who they would be without having experienced the beauty, the heartbreak, and the joy that adoption brings. Our children from China all have special needs and to watch the heart of a 10-year-old boy completely turned over because of his love for his physically challenged sister is something that changed me – just by witnessing it. In a recent candid discussion with two of my boys (12 and 14) I asked, “What would our family be like if we had never adopted?” Of course, I hadn’t really intended on asking that question and once those words were out I immediately began to think of their possible perspective: vacations missed, the huge no-frills van we drive, fewer gifts on holidays, less time with mom and dad. But they both replied in unison, “Our family would be so boring! Only God can change hearts like that.
Guest Post: Why does God call people to adopt?
4. For a watching world. This goes for those inside the church and outside the church. Because adoption is a picture of the Gospel being walked out by busted-up people simply following after a perfect God. He uses us, despite us, to care for the least of these and bring glory to Himself in the process. Of course, this doesn’t mean you’ll be embraced by a watching world – in fact, expect be excluded by some – but you can be sure the Lord will use your family as a walking testimony of how He redeems, repairs and rescues His children. That includes the grown-up children, too. And know that you won’t see most of what He does in the hearts of those who are touched by your family’s obedience to the call of adoption, but trust that He is using your story for His perfect purpose.
Guest Post: Why does God call people to adopt?
5. For Him. Ultimately, God calls us to adopt for Him. It’s His heart that beats and breaks for the orphan, the lost, and the lonely. And it is only because He calls us, equips us and sustains us that we are able to fulfill His purposes. And I believe He delights in transforming His children into the likeness of His Son along the way.
So if you are called to adopt, count yourself greatly blessed. As bearers of the Good News, called to adoption, we get to participate in His magnificent plan to redeem what this broken world has trampled on. What a merciful and loving God we serve. And if the journey gets difficult – and it will – just remember it’s His thing, this orphan care movement. And He will finish what He has started. Because these children are His beloved.
We are all His beloved.
And when we obey the call and join Him in His story we realize this is what we were made for. We were made for so much more than serving our selves and pursuing our dreams (just 4 kids and an early retirement, please). Instead, He comes down, changes our hearts and changes our dreams. And His plan is so. much. better.

Treasure!

We are so excited to launch a very special fundraiser to help us bring home Baby K!

It is the culmination of efforts by two mamas with a passion for the orphan, and a call to ponder the things that really matter ~ those of eternal impact.

Clayton and I strive to chase hard after the Lord, laying aside the things of this world.  Our reminder of this moment-by-moment race is Jesus’ words in Matthew 6:21 ~ “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”

When I asked my dear Jesus-loving friend, Amy Shaw, to sketch a t-shirt design using this Scripture, she was thrilled to do so (she and Brian share our passion for Jesus and the orphan)!

Amy has sketched a unique and personal design which we’ve made into a t-shirt specifically to help us bring our Treasure home from China.

Introducing…

Women’s fitted or classic, sizes S, M, L, and XL ~ $25 (includes s&h)

The Day I Found Easter Dresses in the Attic

With ten kids at home, I was dreading the seasonal clothing changeover.  It means I climb a ladder into the cold attic and start handing marked boxes down into the hands of children who can’t wait to tear through them like it’s Christmas morning.

But this morning was different.  Everyone was in school, except the toddlers, who were intently watching cartoons.  I decided to stay in the attic long enough to rummage through a few boxes to find a single warmer-weather outfit for each child, you know, for that random day that exceeds the seasonal 40 degrees.

And then it happened.  I found dresses!  Dresses beautiful enough to wear for Easter!

I hadn’t even begun to think of them.  Mostly because I wouldn’t have the time or money to shop for special clothing.  But in a few boxes I found six dresses ranging from sizes 2 to 8, each perfect for Easter.  And it hit me.  I was overcome with thanksgiving.  And joy.  And awe.

I was reminded of the journey to bring each of our children home from the other side of the globe.  I thought of those who inspired us in the first place.  I remembered those who prayed for and encouraged us.  I thought of everyone who gave, even sacrificially, to change a child’s life.  Which in turn would change my life.

I thought of those who kept our ever-growing krew while we traveled, those who brought meals, and those who taxied them from place to place.  And then I remembered the reason I was in the attic in the first place: because others have been so very generous toward our family!

Clothes have been given to us at church, in Bible study, at ball games, sent in the mail and left in our vehicle.

Gone were the thoughts of stacks of paper work, tireless, humbling fundraising, contemplating where we would place yet another bed, never-ending laundry, crowd-size meals and the need to ‘justify’ having so many children.

I was overcome with joy.  I was in awe of God’s goodness and provision.  It’s not just about the clothes.  It’s that He knows exactly what we need.  It’s the way He touches the hearts of His people.  It’s the way He blesses when we give and when we receive.  It’s about stewardship.  And changing hearts.

Ten years ago I would have gone to a department store and not given a second thought to overspending for a single dress.  Now the journey is different.  The treasure is different.  It represents a work in progress in my own heart.  It’s about a shift in thinking about sacrifice.

Nothing I do or give is as great as what’s been done and given for me.

It’s true that not every family is meant to be large.  And God has a purpose and a role for each of us.  Some plant the seed, some water it, and God makes it grow!

1 Cor 3:6-8  ~I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow.  So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.  The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor. ~

Thank you to every person who invests in the lives of others.

To Him be glory!

Mama Talk!

Friday I had the privilege of meeting a bloggy friend (and prayer warrior) in person!

Many of you know Laurel from Our Journey of Faith.
I found Laurel's blog a few years ago when we were going through a rough patch in adoption.  Laurel is so transparent, and her blog is a haven for families needing prayer, seeking advice from someone who's been.there.done.that. or just needing the assurance they are not alone.

I've also had the privilege of getting to know her better on our recent fitness journey, and I can tell you, she is quite an inspiration and a beauty inside and out!!!

Laurel and four of her Treasures stopped for a much-too-short visit as they traveled through our state.  I look forward to our next visit where we will pick up right where we left off!

The Sandwich

My friend Lori is an amazing cook!  Lucky for me (and you!) she shares some of her secrets on her blog.
I love how she takes simple things and makes them delectable!!!  Who knew?!?
I buy French bread from W*l-mart all the time to go with homemade soups, but I never thought to do this...

It is just as delicious as it looks!  Lori's recipe is here!  I tweaked it a bit for my our taste.  I don't like to sweat when I eat, so I eliminated the jalapenos.  I used shredded Mozzarella cheese on the bottom half, shaved Cure 81 ham, and shredded pizza blend cheese on the top.  And I had to use two loaves for this Krew.  Oh.my.yummy!

And I think I promised I'd share the recipe for this *again*

One Skillet Chocolate Chip Cookie
1 stick unsalted butter
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1 egg
3 tbsp milk
1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350
Add the stick of butter to an 8 or 10 inch cast iron skillet and melt over medium-high heat.  Once melted, stir in sugars and vanilla and remove from heat.
Whisk in egg and milk, then stir in the flour, soda and salt.
Fold in the chocolate chips.
Bake in preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes till cooked through.
*we actually prefer gooey*
Serve warm from the skillet.
*The skillet is HOT*

Now, go be a hero!
In one simple post I've given you an entire meal :)

Reflections...

I started this post the day before we left China:
As our time in China draws to a close, I am reflecting on God's goodness.  Not just over the past 8 months, but over the last 9 years.  If you'd told me that God would grow our family by 8 children in 9 years, I wouldn't have believed it.

We've heard amazing testimony of God's sovereignty in the last 2 weeks.  We knew that many families were fully funded within a week or so of travel - praise God!  But there have been so many things that only God could orchestrate and bring to fruition.  The timing of our travel was nothing short of miraculous!  The timing of meeting friends (old and new) while in China was amazing! The timing of Brad and Kim's availability to move into our home and care for our family was incredible!  I truly stand in awe of HIM!

It's true the enemy tried so many schemes to destroy our joy, but the enemy is not victorious!  Three weeks before we left we still needed over half the funds to complete the adoption.  One and a half weeks before we left we had an ice/snow storm that left us without power for days.  Because of the outage I wasn't able to prepare the food I'd planned for the family while we were gone.  We weren't able to work during that time.  We learned that our in-country costs were much higher than estimated.  Our travel to China was one nightmare after another with delays and missed flights, making us arrive a day late, only to find out our Gotcha Day would also be delayed, due to another reason.  And so on...but GOD!  He allowed these things to happen, and HE worked out every detail.
Catching a much-needed cat nap on the luggage during our 7 hour layover in Beijing...

And now it is 5 am, and although I thought I was gonna kick this jet lag, tain't so!  I didn't sleep a wink last night.  I am determined to press through it today and not give in to the 2 pm shutdown of my tired body.  I'll let ya' know how that turns out :)

My inability to sleep gives me lots of time to talk to the Lord.  I am still overwhelmed by all that transpired over the last few weeks.  I can't believe our friends would move their entire family to our home (a state away) and not only care for our children, but entertain them and love them the whole time.  I can't believe the only time Kim had to cook for this krew was the weekends because the church provided food the rest of the time.  I can't believe so many people showed up at the airport to welcome us home.  I can't believe how well Khloie has taken to her siblings.  I was afraid her shy self would struggle so much with the realization she is not an only child :)  Quite the opposite actually.  My goodness, she loves the attention.  She has already explored the entire house.  She has said new words, out loud!  In fact, we are reining in a little because she would be perfectly content with her sisters feeding her full-time and Mommy just scooting out of the picture.  So, things will need to be a little different today.

Just the two of us going to China was a much-needed time of bonding for Khloie.  She needed to know who Daddy and Mommy are, and we needed to give our full attention to her.  With ten kiddos at home, we pretty much hit the ground runnin' once we are home.  We are so grateful for the time to refocus.

But I know some things about myself.
*I like soft beds.
*I like routine.
*I like my tiny shower with soft water.
*I like doing my own laundry.
*I like my drinks with ice, please.
*I like preparing meals.
*I like ground travel...

But seriously, all selfishness aside, we witnessed so many miracles while in China!
*Khloie's transition has been incredible
*Hiccups for families in our group caused us to pause and pray right there in the lobby of the ginormous Garden Hotel lobby (and every one of those prayers were answered!!!)
*We met friends we never dreamed we'd get the chance to meet
*As a group we witnessed to one of our guides in *GZ, a family bought her a Bible and she'd already started reading it before we left
*We attended an international ch*rch where 50 countries are represented
*We never got sick

The day before we left China I pulled a doozy!  In a rush to get a pic with a dear friend I'd only met on line until last week, I lost my camera battery.  Yep, totally lost it.  Only phone pics after that.  Had the entire hotel staff searching for the battery.  Turns out, it had fallen into a gift bag my friend delivered to an orphanage that day :)  Ah well.

Truth is, we have so much to be thankful for!  I'm sure there will be lots of pictures to follow, but for now I will share some of the phone pix I took and some of the airport pix from my friend, Anita.
