A Series - Older Child Adoption, Written by Diane

I asked my friend Diane if I could share her candid posts here, and she graciously allowed me to do so.

While our stories differ a bit, there are similarities.

While our children share residual effects of their histories, they are each unique.

Whether I am writing or sharing deep posts such as these, I pause to recall the purpose of my blog.  I'll admit that I've deleted many drafts simply because they didn't meet the criteria of glorifying God.  The second purpose of my blog is to give friends and family a window into our daily rather boring lives.  Another is to offer encouragement to families considering adoption, and/or struggling with post-placement issues such as trauma and attachment.

This blog is a journal that chronicles God's goodness in our lives.  It reminds us of the dark places we've been and the many times and ways He has brought us to the light, whether by removing the mountain or refining us in the trek over it.

In summary, the theme of my blog is that God is ABLE!  There is simply nothing bigger than our heavenly Father.

With each of Diane's posts, I will include her 'Note to the Reader,' and I would ask that you show respect and kindness in your comments.  She has courageously addressed a topic that has been overlooked far too long, and to the detriment of families feeling isolated and guilt-ridden.  You may read it here or click the link to her blog.
To Him be the glory!

Before I begin the story of my painful fall, and I phrase it that way because it was I who had the attachment disorder, not Eliza. She loved her home from the beginning. Of course she struggled in the transition of it all, and she and our oldest daughter had some difficulties sharing a room. But even only weeks home, every single time we would drive up to our house, “Eliza would chant in her somewhat loud, vigorous, determined voice, “I love my home! I love my home! I love my home!”
Early on she attached to Mark, but it wasn’t long until she loved me, loved to be in my arms, loved to rub her hands up and down my body as I worked, loved to be so close to me that I would trip over her, and it felt as if she wished she could climb inside of me, loved me with a fervor and intensity that drained me. Even today, when things are good, and I have grown to adore my precious Eliza Jane, she daily says to me, “Mommy, I wish I could be in your tummy too.”
20140709-173501-63301159.jpg
I’ve heard it said that no matter what age child you adopt, attachment begins at infancy, and having walked this journey for twenty two months, I can say that I heartily agree. I have held and rocked the girls, given them sippy cups of warm milk, sung lullabies to them as they have drifted off to sleep, and I have cocooned them from the world as much as I have been able, and I still do.
I eventually came to realize that I no longer could homeschool all of our children, and I will write more about that later, but for now I want to say that Eliza started school one week before Evangeline had her surgery on June 4th. She is doing well, and even going to an extended summer program. She has begged me to send her to school, and has frequently said, “Mommy, I want to learn! I want to learn. I can learn Mommy.”

Many of you have followed my blog from the beginning and are aware of much of our early confusion and inability to identify where Eliza was cognitively. We travelled to China believing we were adopting a neuro-typical child, and soon realized that she was anything but neuro typical. You can read about all of those stories on my blog in the months after we travelled in September of 2012.
Having said all of that, Eliza has made AMAZING progress in the past months, and I do not believe, after more intensive schooling than I have been able to give her, that she will be classified as even borderline MR. She may have some mild “institutional autism” as a result of the years she lived in an orphanage, but she is amazingly capable and extremely bright. She can read and write Mandarin at a gifted level. We have had her letters and writings translated by various translators, all of which have exclaimed that she writes extremely well, and many have added, ‘I can’t write like that.”
20140709-174207-63727964.jpg
Recently, we had some wonderful visitors from the Midwest who have also adopted children from China, one of which was the little girl, Emily, who shared a bed with Evangeline before she was adopted, and who was the reason Evangeline has become our daughter. From the time Emily came home to her mother, she asked her if Dang Mian Fang had a family yet. It was her continual prodding of her mother which caused Emily’s mother to call her agency and ask them to find Evangeline’s file. Her picture then circulated through Facebook, and the rest is history. I have told that story too. You can read it here in a post called, The Whole Story.
20140709-181206-65526070.jpg
I also share pictures from their visit here. Their visit blessed our family in so many ways, one of which was that it was very affirming to me that we, as a family, had been right to cocoon the girls, and to hold them close for as long as we have.
One of the children who visited was adopted from a disruption. I believe she is now sixteen. She kept saying to her mother about Eliza, “Look at all she can do. She can do that? I couldn’t do those things when I was only home that long.”
Her sweet and attentive mother kindly said to her daughter, “Honey, she has been home with a mother who taught her and kept her close for all these months. Your family left you alone in your room.”
I share that not to brag about my parenting, or my strength, for as you will see as I share this story it was I who fell short and wore out. Yet even in my weakness, Eliza is doing far better than I ever could have dreamed she would. In the early days, she was sitting under the table hidingfrom me.
20140709-174521-63921050.jpg
Now she is an integral part of our family. She is quick and efficient. If we lose anything, we always ask Eliza because she usually knows. She cooks. She cleans. She loves. She loves her mother with a sincerity that any mother would be blessed to know. She sets her timer every night so she can bring me warm milk while I’m writing before bed.
She loves the dogs and cat and takes care of them without fail. She is kind and thoughtful, and so very thankful to be a McCaslin. I have grown to depend on her. She can feed our enormous crew and clean it all up with an efficiency that is exceptional. She is capable and considerate.
And I love her so very very much. She has become a child of my heart. My skin no longer bristles when she touches me, and I don’t recoil from her presence. God has blessed me with a mother’s love for Eliza, and I have grown accustomed to her presence in our lives. I miss her when she is away at school.
20140709-174208-63728792.jpg
I share this now before I tell the story of the valley we walked through because I want to make it clear that no matter how dark it felt or how impossible the situation seemed, God was making beauty from ashes, streams in the dessert. I couldn’t see them. But they were there, and I have arrived at this place only through faith where I can share with honesty the pain I felt and consumed my days.
19 Behold, I am doing a new thing;
now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
I will make a way in the wilderness
and rivers in the desert. ~ Isaiah 43:19
As I look back over the dark days when my faith was faltering and my flesh was weary, I can see clearly that God carried me through those dark days, and it was His faithfulness that brought us through the darkness. It was God working in our hearts, “to will and to do of His good pleasure,”even when we were at our weakest.
I welcome you and invite you to share in this story of our humanity and weakness for God’s glory, and if you are walking a similar path, that you might know that you are not alone, and that God is faithful to finish what He has started in your hearts.
For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen. ~ Romans 11:36

Life is This...

The Lord has blessed us with an incredible harvest!
The crop just keeps producing!

We've had to make some priority changes this summer.  It feels like we're just hunkered down here on the farm, alienated from the activities going on around us.  And maybe we are...for a season.
The crop is so abundant that it requires much attention.
So our prayer has been that we would be diligent in stewarding the Lord's crop.  And satisfied in Him.

He has given us energy in times of exhaustion.
He has given us strength in times of weakness.
He has given us hope in times of struggle.
We have spent a lot of time together as a family.
Of course, that's always peachy *ahem*.
Our sorters start at 5 am, so we've ditched the frozen waffles and cold cereal (and there's nothing wrong with those!) for homemade breakfast every morning.

We still have over 2 weeks of harvest left.
We are tired, but we are so blessed!
We praise the Lord for His crop!

Detours

The story of Jonah’s reluctance to obey God and go to Ninevah to “cry out against it” reminds me of my own reluctance to fully trust and obey Him. Jonah tried to run as far as he could in the opposite direction.

Though I may not physically board a ship, I often respond in disobedience for reasons which may seem legitimate.
*“God, that is impossible.”
*“Lord, You know how people already think I’m crazy.”
*“I’m not sure I heard you clearly so let me talk this over with someone.”
*“But, Lord, I’m X old.”
*“I promise to be faithful…later.”
*“I have nothing to offer.”
*“That’s not my calling.”
*“But that would require so much of me.”

While wise counsel is good, nothing trumps the Word of the Lord. And the things He calls us to are impossible…for us. Otherwise, we wouldn’t need Him, and the glory would only be ours. And considering the sacrifice He made for us, can we really offer too much? Though it is the way of the world, are we more concerned about pleasing the Lord or man?

I praise the Lord that He is a God of second chances…and endless mercy.

Just as Jonah came to realize how wrong he was to run from God, so can we. Hopefully we aren’t in the belly of a big fish when we see the light.

Our moment of realization may come in missed opportunities, more trouble, falling prey to the lies of the enemy or sinking into sin.

Where is your Ninevah? And what is causing you to detour?

The Winner Is...

...my sweet friend, Elisabeth Schaap!

Elisabeth is known by many in the adoption community, and it is my privilege to call her friend!
Not only is she an adoptive mama, but she is brokenhearted for those left behind, and she gives immeasurably to families paperchasing for their children.
You can catch a glimpse of her heart on her blog HERE!

I want to thank each person who gave and shared.  Without your help, we wouldn't be able to move to the next step.
A special thank you to those who are praying us through our journey to Kohlby.  It is so encouraging to know we are being lifted to the throne of grace.  It is such a journey of faith, but we will not grow weary, for we know that He is always faithful, even when we are not, He finishes what He begins, His plans cannot be thwarted, and His promises cannot be broken!

We just learned that our paperwork is at the USCIS.  Now we await fingerprint appointments and then 800A approval.  And while we wait, we are preparing our dossier and applying for adoption assistance grants.

May the Lord be glorified in every part of this adoption journey!

Week at the Creek!

I'm just giddy about the week ahead!  One of my passions is serving the youth.
For the 14th year in a row (except 2 years ago following Kasidi's spine surgery) I'm headed to camp!
And this year, for the first time in 10 years...I'm going without a Pack N' Play!
That's right, my babies are divvied up among relatives and friends.
I miss them already!
But I'm looking forward to serving the youth with both hands this year.
Four of my Treasures are having a blast with their aunt, uncle and cousins!

And the littlest three are staying home with Daddy, spending their days with friends, because...
...just a few days after camp, we'll be rising to that 2 a.m. alarm and starting to harvest the Lord's crop!

I'm really looking forward to a week of quiet moments with the Lord and loud moments with the youth.

We truly appreciate your prayers for the week ahead.

TO HIM BE GLORY!

Transformer Fundraiser/Giveaway!

Well, y'all, I have been scratching my head.
Truth is, I detest the need to fund raise.
I LOVE the purpose.
But I hate asking and asking and asking some more.
We are completely dependent upon the Lord as our Provision.
He loves Kohlby even more than we do.
And we are committed to doing everything, through His strength, to get our son home.
We have a couple of large fees due.
My flesh wants to get really anxious.
But then I am reminded that the Lord has never forsaken us.  Never!
Because we must be so transparent about our fundraising, we are also accountable.
We are scrimping and saving every penny we can.
We are still asking the Lord for creative ideas to fund this adoption process.  And we are asking Him for direction as to when we just need to rest in Him and hold off on the fundraising madness.  Whether we are resting or acting, we pray that He is glorified.
Since the Lord is in the process of transforming Kohlby's life, we thought it appropriate to offer up an item with a similar name - the Transformer :)
So, here's the gig...

Wedding Bells!

I am so blessed to have witnessed an absolute Christ-centered wedding ceremony!
And as the mother of the groom, I am doubly blessed!
The marriage of my child is bittersweet.
It marks the end of the era of his being 'mine' (although he has always belonged to the Lord).
And it marks the beginning of a beautiful lifelong covenant with his bride, who is lovely both inside and out.
I don't have any 'official' photos yet, and I didn't take any once the ceremony began because I didn't want to miss a single moment.  But here are a few shots captured on the glorious day~
The couple

Flower girls' dresses, shoes and bows (thank you, Tina!)

On our way to the ceremony...early, I might add!

Be still, my heart.
Kayden wanted to take a picture of us so she told the girls to crowd in, and this is what they did!

Gorgeous little ladies

I was truly humbled.
We decided to prepare and serve the rehearsal dinner ourselves.
Seemed easy enough for 50 people.
I've never made so much alfredo in my life.
But thanks to an amazing church member who stepped in to serve, we pulled it off!
I love this couple, and I can't wait to see what the Lord has in store for their lifetime together!

"You Can't Save the World"

"You can't save the world," and other nonsensical notions.

My heart is ripped out of my chest every time I read stories or see images such as the one below.  When I see this precious child, abandoned, I don't see a stranger from another country; I see one of my children.
My children are no longer abandoned, orphaned, neglected, abused or forgotten.  They are wanted, loved, cherished, nurtured, trained, disciplined...wanted.

Stories like the one below are reality, church.  These conditions exist in every corner of the fallen world in which we live.  And yet we can't bear to acknowledge it.  Because then we might feel we need to do something.  Or feel guilty for not doing something.  We just want to get away from the stress of our comfy existence.  But when we are in our escape, might we consider the stress that millions of children face every day?  Or the stress that would cause a parent to do such a thing?

How easy it is for us (me included!) to forget the purpose for which we are given life.  It is not to satisfy our need for leisure, comfort and pleasure.  Rather, we are given life so that we might serve our Creator and glorify Him by loving others.  There are so many ways we can pass God's love for us on to others.

God has given our family a heartbeat for those left behind.  There is nothing special about us.  Not.one.thing.  We are simply choosing to put aside some of the temporary comforts this world has to offer in exchange for things that may make an eternal difference.  This is not to magnify us; it is to glorify Him.  And it is not a sacrifice for us.  To the contrary, it is a blessing.  But it isn't always easy.  And our behavior isn't always glorifying.  But we strive daily to respond to the Lord as He draws us to Himself.  As John Piper says, "...may the current of your affections flow toward the Father."  Yes, that's what I want!  I want to be able to cast aside the pleasures of this world without sadness because I am chasing so hard after the Lord that He is my whole heart's desire and all-consuming Purpose.

So, I can't save the world.  But I want to breathe my last knowing that I tried.  As I look out my rose colored glasses from the vantage point of the wealthiest nation in the world, this is what I see ~

Over 40 Babies Received by 'Safe Haven' in Jinan

Over 40 Babies Received by 'Safe Haven' in Jinan
A six-year-old girl was thrown from a car outside a "safe haven" for abandoned children on Thursday in Jinan city, capital of East China's Shandong Province, before the vehicle sped away. Workers found 2,600 yuan ($412) in her pocket, together with a note giving her birthday as May 5, 2008. The refuge had received 44 abandoned children since opening on June 1. [iqilu.com]
By yesterday, the shelter for abandoned babies in Jinan, Shandong Province, has received 44 abandoned babies and children since its opening on June 1, according to Cai Hanming, deputy director of the Jinan Children's Welfare Institution, which runs the shelter. Cai confirmed that all of these baibies suffer illnesses and more than 10 children are above 1 year old.
Cai added that the number of the children they received in the past six days  already exceeded half of the total number of the children they received in 2013, and the institution felt much more pressure than before.
China now has 25 such "safe havens" for abandoned children. The first one was established in Shijiazhuang, Hebei province, in 2011.
Several shelters have reported that they have faced difficulties because the number of abandoned babies they received exceeded their expectations.
Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province, suspended the trial operation of its safe haven in March after receiving 262 babies and children after it opened in January.
Nanjing, capital city of Jiangsu province, has installed surveillance cameras in its safe haven to prevent parents from abandoning children, as the number of babies received has been surging since its opening in December.
The safe havens that are scheduled to open in Zhengzhou, Henan province, and Urumqi, the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, on June 1 have been delayed.
However, Cai Hanming, deputy director of the Jinan Children's Welfare Institution, said the institution is able to run the safe haven well.
In addition to 100 beds, the institution has a 200-square-meter room in place for babies and children, the Jinan Children's Welfare Institution said.
The institution has workers on duty round-the-clock.
Covering 13 square meters, the safe haven in Jinan is a two-floor building, with the first floor storing medical devices and the second floor receiving babies.
The safe haven is painted with colors of pink and green with the eaves painted with cartoon images. Windows are decorated with cartoon stickers to protect privacy.
