So This is the Face...

...of spina bifida?
I've been doing a little research in preparation for Kasidi's appointment at Shriner's this Friday.

Out of curiosity I thought I'd check stats on the abortion rate for babies diagnosed prenatally with SB.

It's hard to get really good numbers, and they vary from state to state, year to year.

But the fact that we can still estimate 50 percent of babies are aborted after being diagnosed with spina bifida is astounding!

This baby with a 'birth defect' has so much heart and personality it astonishes me!
One mama gave her life...

...and now this mama is going to give her the best life possible! I sure can't imagine our family without her!

  1. LOVE THIS!

But so sad that so many people miss out on the greatest blessings because of fear.

That girly is such a little DARLING!!

  2. Connie I have to tell you that whenever I think of adoption, I think of this precious little one, and how amazing the Lord was(and still is) in your journey to her and how she is thriving now. Every time I think of her I see a smiling face and the word Joy, what a fitting name! Her whole story and your whole family encourages me greatly in my own journey to my daughter, what an absolute gift she is from the Lord! Much love to you

  3. Stats on SB termination are indeed hard to determine, but it's been reported as over 90% in some states. Most moms of children with SB I know say that the OB simply assumed that they'd terminate solely based on the SB diagnosis - that it wasn't even a question. OB/GYNs paint life with SB in the worst possible light and it's absolutely terrible. Our national SB association here in the US doesn't address termination at all, but it's something that's very important to the president of the international association - to raise awareness about the quality of life and potential of individuals with spina bifida. Unfortunately, more money goes into awareness for folic acid and its role in preventing SB than goes into raising awareness about SB itself and sending the message that it's not a death sentence. Kasidi is filled with so much JOY indeed - I am so happy that she is home at last and can blossom - and be all the Lord created her to be - with the love, support, and guidance of her family. Praise God!
